If you haven't met USA Luge Marketing Manager Dmitry Feld or Lake Placid High School senior Davey Mihill, you're missing out on knowing two of our community's finest human beings.
On Thursday, April 27, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, you'll get a chance to shake their hands when they are given the 2017 Adult and Youth Distinguished Volunteer of the Year awards. The event is free and will include snacks and beverages.
Each year, the Lake Placid North Elba National Volunteer Week Committee honors one adult and one youth volunteer to highlight and promote community service in the village and town.
Born in the Soviet Union, Feld competed in the sport of luge from a young age. He moved to Lake Placid in 1984 to work for USA Luge. His list of volunteerism is extensive, from helping emigrants and refugees re-settle in the region, to raising money for area youth.
Feld is the president of the Shipman Youth Center board of directors and is the volunteer general manager of the annual I Love BBQ Festival, a fundraiser for the Shipman Youth Center, helping to raise over $230,000.
Mihill is the brother of Caleb and the son of David and Mandy Mihill. Over the past four years, he has volunteered 625 hours helping students of all ages in the Lake Placid school community; he has completed a minimum of 50 hours every year since he was in grade 6. He has helped organizations such as the Lake Placid Elementary School Drama Club, the Lake Placid Middle School Halloween Assembly and the Murder Mystery Theatre. He currently mentors an eight grader in art on a weekly basis.
Mihill has been accepted to Cazenovia College, RIT, Hofstra University, Pratt MWP, and the Pratt Institute. He is in the process of making his decision, and he looks forward to studying visual communications and journalism next year.
