LAKE PLACID - April 21, 1977 marks the 40th anniversary of when construction began for the Olympic Ice Center.

Gilbane Building Company managed the construction site in the center of the village of Lake Placid. Its site was chosen due to the proximity of the Olympic Speedskating Oval, and it was adjacent to the original 1932 Olympic Ice Arena. Community members and visitors were able to watch the progress made over two years, and the building was finished in time for the Norton International Figure Skating Competition in September 1979.
