Bombers celebrate tennis seniors

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid tennis teams were swept Friday in their regular season finale against Beekmantown. The Blue Bombers boys and girls squads both fell to the Eagles by identical 3-2 scores.

Lake Placid's teams were honoring their seniors who were playing their final home matches of their careers on a sunny, brisk afternoon.

The Blue Bombers boys team picked up its victories from its top two singles players, with both wins coming in straight sets.

Competing in the top singles match, senior Sawyer Chase played for the final time on his home court and defeated Beekmantown's Wyatt Brown 6-0, 6-1. Sonja Toishi followed in second singles with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over Elliot Horwitz.

The Eagles then captured the final singles and both doubles contests. In third singles, Max French topped Camden Reiley of the Blue Bombers by 7-6 (7-1) and 6-2 scores.

In the first doubles match, Lake Placid's Tucker Jakobe and Tristan Spotts fell to Beekmantown's Brandon Belrose and Sean Williams 6-2, 6-4, and in the second doubles contest, Lake Placid's first-year players Ben Isabella and Bailey Bartholomew were defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Jalen Belrose and Riley Quackenbush.

The Blue Bombers boys finished their Champlain Valley Athletic Conference slate with a 4-4 record.

Lake Placid's girls picked up two singles victories in their setback against the Eagles.

Barrett Smith earned a victory for Lake Placid at second singles. The junior topped Beekmantown's Sierra Gowette 6-2, 6-2. Ashley Strack captured the Blue Bombers other singles win competing in the third match against Chloe Berry. Strack, another Lake Placid senior competing for the last time at home, won in straight sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

Blue Bombers senior Laurel Miller fell in a well-played first singles match. Miller was defeated by Rylea Fesette 6-2, 6-4.

Karli Casler and Chelby Lawrence fell in the first doubles match as Eagles Emma Berch and Kaitlyn Bjelko came through with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Casler and Lawrence were also seniors wrapping up their competitive run at home.

Lizzie Hynes and Kylie McFadden took the second doubles contest, topping Lake Placid's Jillian Robinson and Karis Hudson 6-4, 6-3.

Lake Placid's girls finished the regular season with a 3-5 mark.

The Section VII championships are on tap next for Lake Placid. Action kicks off Wednesday with the opening rounds of play. The girls sectional tournament will be held at AuSable Valley High School and the boys will play in Plattsburgh.
