GARDEN CLUB NEWS: Planning the Secret Gardens Tour
June 29, 2018

Chipmunks chattering, crows calling, woodpeckers drumming, birds singing a beautiful variety of songs, loons with their distinctive comments on the state of their world - these are the sounds of summer.

The other sounds of summer include motorcycles roaring down the highways, builders hammering and drilling, black flies buzzing in your ears, music from the Sinfonietta in Mid's Park echoing across the lake. These sounds are also part of summer in Lake Placid. Enjoy it!

The garden is a wonderful place to experience summer.

A very different experience with flowers will be the subject of the Garden Club meeting on Thursday, July 12 . Linda D'Arco, owner of Little Farmhouse Flowers in Jay, will talk about her unusual specialty and heirloom cut flowers. She describes her business as a family-owned floral studio and flower farm which values sustainably grown plants and organic practices.

D'Arco's team, which consists of a family of four plus seasonal helpers, tends the flowers from seed to harvest. These are not the sort of flowers you might find in a supermarket, and there are beautiful photos online at

This lovely Secret Garden's Tour is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 29. The Mirror Lake Beach House is also the site for all ticket holders to exchange tickets for a tour booklet and map to guide them to the various properties, including a special location for refreshments.

Refreshments are included in the purchase of a garden tour ticket. The tour will take place rain or shine, and all sales are final.

Among the tour's nine garden properties, much will be of interest. Visitors will get ideas of what and how to successfully plant in the challenging conditions of an alpine zone. The variety includes large and small gardens, full shade and full sun gardens, gardens built on hillsides and gardens on flat lawns.

Comfortable walking shoes are highly suggested for your personal safety. Some gardens are on sloping lawns and require ascending and descending steps and uneven ground.

As publicity chair for the Secret Gardens Tour, Linda Friedlander said, "As members of the Garden Club of Lake Placid, we feel blessed to live here and want to share our bounty. Many thanks to our generous hosts, who will open their Lake Placid properties, to those who appreciate beauty and local planting efforts."

Proceeds from this tour will support the continued efforts by the Garden Club to support community projects in Lake Placid.
